Red Queen

January 14, 2023 by Melanie

This was a school read for my 13 yo daughter to complete over the summer, shes a little above her grade reading level since shes such a book worm and this is age appropriate and still provides her engaged reading. It’s the first book of a series and she greatly enjoyed this book. It came in a timely fashion and in great condition (paperback). She enjoyed this book so much she finished it in a weeks time. She put the rest of the series on her list for Christmas/birthday. If your kid is into fantasy and enjoys adventure readings than this is a great book to add to the collection. – Amazon Review

Red Queen

The #1 New York Times bestselling series!

Red Queen, by #1 New York Times bestselling author Victoria Aveyard, is a sweeping tale of power, intrigue, and betrayal, perfect for fans of George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones series.

Mare Barrow’s world is divided by blood—those with common, Red blood serve the Silver-blooded elite, who are gifted with superhuman abilities. Mare is a Red, scraping by as a thief in a poor, rural village, until a twist of fate throws her in front of the Silver court. Before the king, princes, and all the nobles, she discovers she has an ability of her own.

To cover up this impossibility, the king forces her to play the role of a lost Silver princess and betroths her to one of his own sons. As Mare is drawn further into the Silver world, she risks everything and uses her new position to help the Scarlet Guard—a growing Red rebellion—even as her heart tugs her in an impossible direction.

One wrong move can lead to her death, but in the dangerous game she plays, the only certainty is betrayal.

Plus don’t miss Realm Breaker! Irresistibly action-packed and full of lethal surprises, this stunning fantasy series from Victoria Aveyard, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Red Queen series, begins where hope is lost and asks: When the heroes have fallen, who will take up the sword?

Dune

January 1, 2023 by Melanie

Far-reaching and mind-expanding, when I first read Dune in the ’60s I had my mouth open most of the time, and could only read half a page or so at a time before looking off into space for a few moments in awe, thinking about what I had just read. Thousands of years in the future, where mankind is able to control every single muscle in his body, where computers (which, when I read the book, were relatively new at the time) had been surpassed hundreds of years earlier, where mankind has spread an empire across the universe, and was beginning, through evolution and technology, to advance beyond humankind…a towering classic, anyone with any interest in science fiction at all must read this book. (and btw, I like David Lynch’s 1984 feature film, you had to have read the book to follow the movie.) – Amazon Review

Dune

NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE directed by Denis Villeneuve, starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Chang Chen, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem.

Frank Herbert’s classic masterpiece—a triumph of the imagination and one of the bestselling science fiction novels of all time.

Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, heir to a noble family tasked with ruling an inhospitable world where the only thing of value is the “spice” melange, a drug capable of extending life and enhancing consciousness. Coveted across the known universe, melange is a prize worth killing for….

When House Atreides is betrayed, the destruction of Paul’s family will set the boy on a journey toward a destiny greater than he could ever have imagined. And as he evolves into the mysterious man known as Muad’Dib, he will bring to fruition humankind’s most ancient and unattainable dream.

A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction.

The story takes off pretty quick and keeps getting better the whole way through. The fleshed out

Creating Human

The city of Shinar is full of strange and mysterious oddities, but none so great as the black bag of Leonard Bravecci. That is, of course, with the exception of the man himself.

When the disgraced inventor returns from exile, the people of Shinar are quick to turn him away. Even a lifetime would not be long enough to forget Leonard’s sins which afflict the town to this day. But where others see the sole survivor of a massacre, Pooka, a desperate con artist, sees an opportunity.

Cursed as Leonard may be, Pooka would be a fool not to capitalize on his misfortune. Cursed is an understatement, however, and the reluctant pair go from selling elixirs at Estacion de Commercio to a prison cell in Katorga. They must learn to trust one another, working together to save the city that despises them before The Sweller’s Disease takes hold of the town completely.

About the Author

The Last Graduate: A Novel

July 27, 2022 by Melanie Leave a Comment

I’m absolutely loving this series, the worldbuilding is still excellent and some of the snark from El made me laugh out loud as I was reading. The plot kept me guessing, and the ending means that I’ll be pre-ordering the third book as soon as it’s available! I was thrown by Amazon listing this as book 2 of 2 in the series but it’s listed as a trilogy on Naomi Novik’s website with the final book due in 2022. – Amazon Review

The Last Graduate: A Novel
(The Scholomance Book 2)

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The specter of graduation looms large as Naomi Novik’s groundbreaking, New York Times bestselling trilogy continues in the stunning sequel to A Deadly Education.

In Wisdom, Shelter. That’s the official motto of the Scholomance. I suppose you could even argue that it’s true—only the wisdom is hard to come by, so the shelter’s rather scant.

Our beloved school does its best to devour all its students—but now that I’ve reached my senior year and have actually won myself a handful of allies, it’s suddenly developed a very particular craving for me. And even if I somehow make it through the endless waves of maleficaria that it keeps throwing at me in between grueling homework assignments, I haven’t any idea how my allies and I are going to make it through the graduation hall alive.

Unless, of course, I finally accept my foretold destiny of dark sorcery and destruction. That would certainly let me sail straight out of here. The course of wisdom, surely.

But I’m not giving in—not to the mals, not to fate, and especially not to the Scholomance. I’m going to get myself and my friends out of this hideous place for good—even if it’s the last thing I do.

With keen insight and mordant humor, Novik reminds us that sometimes it is not enough to rewrite the rules—sometimes, you need to toss out the entire rulebook.

The magic of the Scholomance trilogy will continue in 2022
